Laughter comes easily to Joy. Her bright outgoing personality reflects a strong, secure, robust upbringing. She says she has had few fears of anything in life. Brought up on a sheep station in western Queensland near Longreach she did all the things young station kids do, racing horses though the scrub, riding motor bikes, driving cars and handling cattle. Even now as a 50-something she races a rally car. ‘I’ve always been a boots and all person, dive in and see what happens.’
Joy plays down her role, saying she was there on the spot and naturally she would help. Most people would have done the same thing, she suggests. ‘Dad always taught us to give it a go and I’ve always lived by that. I’ve brought my kids up the same way. I would think all of my kids would do the same thing. They’d all have a go. You don’t know how far somebody is going to go but you would think most people would have a go or try and intervene somehow. But I don’t think it makes you a hero. I think people who donate kidneys and things, that takes a lot more guts.’
Joy maintains that what she did was nothing out of the ordinary. In the end Rosie was in her care and she had a responsibility to ensure her safety. But she would have done the same thing even if Rosie had been a perfect stranger. ‘If someone needs a hand you can’t stand back and do nothing. Even if you are not sure what to do you make it up as you go along.’
In a world where people increasingly need a manual or an expert to do everything, such a philosophy is refreshingly simple and for Rosie, it was simply the difference between life and death.
